Tin Dredger Museum, Tanjung Tualang, Perak




Tanjung Tualang is well known in the past because it has a number of tin mines in operation with large scale. Among the international companies and multinational that have established and operating in Tanjung Tualang is Lower Silver Tin Dredging, Southern Kinta Consolidated, Southern Malayan Tin Dredging, Austral Amalgamated Tin, Osborne & Chapple, Pernas Chartered management and the Malaysian Mining Corporation.

Highlighting the most important is the availability of Tanjung Tualang several Dredger world’s largest Tin. Around the 1970’s there were five ships of Ship 1(the biggest ship at that time) in Tanjung Tualang and there are twelve other ships 3 and ships 5(smaller ship). Now, ship 1 can’t be seen anymore at Tanjung Tualang because in 1980 it has been opened and cleared and sent to Phuket, Thailand. It is transmitted by means installed at sea and towed by a tug boat pontoon.

The picture above is the last tin dredger at Malaysia and its name is T.T. No.5 (ship 5). This dredger now is under the supervision of Department of Antiquities and Museum of Perak.

T.T. No. 5 was built in 1938 by W.F. Payne & Sons for Pernas Chartered Management Sdn. Bhd. has been owned once by Southern Malayan Tin Dredging (M) Sdn Bhd, that dredger has been operating tin dredging operation in the Klang Valley for 44 years. It ceased operations in 1983 following the fall of the tin mining industry.
